The Fragile
by
Mitra De Souza
Seventeen-year-old Maya is a Fragile. She’s spent the last decade locked in a rehabilitation center with other sensitive kids deemed too weak to function in society. Tired of experiencing the pain and emotions of others, she wants nothing more than to be cured of her debilitating empathy. But instead of getting better, she begins to sense the pain of a young girl she has never met. Desperate to escape the pain, she finally learns to empty it.
Into other people.
When Maya discovers the girl is part of the rehabilitation center founder’s plot to destroy the empathy centers in children’s brains, she knows she must use her newfound power to act. But when fighting back against a man bent on destroying anyone like her threatens the lives of those she loves most, she must decide if the fight is worth the risk. Especially when surviving the procedure might free her from the burden of empathy. Permanently.
